It is undoubtedly one of the saddest stories to hit the world of sport since the beginning of the 21st century. Victim of a skiing accident during the holidays on December 29, 2013, Michael Schumacher, now 56, remained in a coma for six months and has not appeared in public since. He had violently hit a rock with his head and suffered "diffuse and serious cranial injuries."

Twelve years later, nothing is known about the health of the German driver, a Formula 1 legend with seven world championship titles. The first two, in 1994 and 1995, were won by Benetton. The boss at the time, Flavio Briatore, hasn't seen "Schumi" since that famous day on the slopes of Méribel. And according to him, it's deliberate. "When I close my eyes, I always see him smiling like after a victory, and I prefer to remember him that way rather than lying in bed. But I am in regular contact with his wife, Corinna," the 75-year-old Italian told Corriere della Sera in an interview published this week.

Briatore's media outing suggests that Michael Schumacher is still battling the after-effects of his terrible crash on a daily basis. Craig Scarborough, who has covered F1 for 25 years and interviewed the driver several times, also shared a little information with The Sun. "I spoke to someone who is very, very close to him and they explained to me that we won't hear anything more from him," he explained, also this week.

In a Netflix documentary released in September 2021, Corinna Schumacher agreed to discuss her husband's health for the first time. "I never blamed God for what happened. It was just bad luck; it could happen to anyone. Of course, I miss him every day. But I'm not the only one who misses him," she tried to put things into perspective. "Everyone misses Michael. But he's here. He's different, but he's here."

On April 13, the Daily Mail revealed that the champion's wife had helped him put his initials "MS" on a helmet that was to be auctioned for charity. A few days earlier, their daughter Gina had given birth to her first child, little Millie, in Switzerland .
